Present Incarnation
Wanderings is a place for me to talk about Chicago, my home town, and many of the interesting things that go on in a large American city with a rich history of birth, growth and development. It's mostly a "vanity" effort on my part; here I write about things that interest me. But I also recognize that there are lots of things that don't interest me that are important to other people. So if you want to read more about Chicago's sports teams, for example, you'll have to find a better source. I listen to the scores on the morning news, and that's about it. On the other hand, if I stumble across and interesting garden walk or museum exhibit, I'm likely to mention that experience in greater depth.
Subscriptions are free, and since I don't get the chance to write very often, you won't be inundated with posting announcements and you certainly won't be deluged with ads for whatever trending trinkets are being peddled by Temu or Amazon. You can cancel your subscription any time.
Previous Incarnations
I used to blog over at Google's Blogger site and there are still quite a few posts over there. But I grew increasingly frustrated with Google's interface that only adds to my cognitive load rather than eases it. So next I tried Ghost, to see if that is an improvement. Ghost certainly seemed to offer more flexibility and features.
Finally, I decided that what I really needed to do was host my own Ghost blog instance on my own server, as much a technical learning exercise as it was an opportunity to write and communicate. I'll have some blog posts about my experience with implementing Ghost on my own server later in this series as well as more technical details in a technical blog site I also have planned.
I finally got all the "moving parts" to work together seamlessly; this was a feat much more difficult than I first imagined, but the process was worth at least as much as the result. I learned a lot along the way.
Subscriptions
You don't need to subscribe to just read blog posts. However, to receive email announcements of new posts or to comment on a posting, you must be subscribed. Once you're subscribed you're in charge of what you receive and you can change or cancel any subscriptions you may have any time, by logging in and accessing your Account information.
